Day 1 Arrival Lhasa
Today you will arrive in Lhasa, probably on Gongkar airport, possible by train. You will be transferred to the hotel and once all group members arrived a guide will give some brief instructions.
Day 2 Lhasa
Today you will make an excursion to the monasteries of Drepung and Sera. The Drepung Monastery is located eight kilometers west of Lhasa. It consists of a series of white buildings stacked against the Gyengbuwudze Mountain. Drepung was founded in 1416 and was once the largest and richest monastery in the world. Also politically Drepung has been an influential centre for a long time. If you are lucky, you can attend a service here with reciting monks, ringing bells, sounding trumpets and dull monotonous drumbeats.

Sera is located three kilometres north of Lhasa at the foot of Tatipu Hill. It is smaller than Drepung, but was once almost as rich and powerful. Sera was famous for its tantric education. In the afternoon you can sometimes experience a meeting in the 'debate garden'. Dozens of monks stand here debating with each other, which involves a lot of clapping of hands.
You will also visit the summer palace of the Dalai Lama; the Norbulinka palace.
Day 3 Lhasa / visit Potala and Jokhang
Potala: The Potala Palace towers over Lhasa and is an enduring landmark of Tibet. Little remains of the original structure built by Songtsen Gampo other than its foundations. After Lhasa was reinstated as the capital of Tibet in the 17th century, the Great 5th Dalai Lama began construction of the White Palace (built 1645 – 53) employing 7000 workers and 1500 artisans.
Jokhang: The Jokhang Temple is 1300 year old, golden roofed building at the center of the Barkhor Market. The most sacred and active Tibetan temples, it was founded by Bhrikuti, King Songtsen Gampo’s Nepalese Bride, on a site chosen by his other wife (a Tang dynasty Chinese princess, Wenchang) as the principal geomantic power – place in Tibet
Day 4 Lhasa
A free day in Lhasa to explore the city by yourself
Day 5 Lhasa - Gyantse via Yamdrok Tso
Gyantse (3950m) is 254 km from Lhasa. The drive is long, yet scenic across the Khamba la, Kora La (passes),along the shores of Lake Yamdrok Tso, Once an important trading town, Gyantse retains the feel of Old Tibet.
Day 6 Gyantse - Shigatse
In the morning, visit Gyantse's Monastery - Pelkor Chode. The main temple of Pelkor Chode, the Tsuklakhang was built 1418 - 1425 AC by the 2nd prince of Gyantse. It was an eclectic academy with 16 dralsang (colleges) belonging variously to Sakya, Butonpa, Geluk and Kagyu schools. All the dralsang buildings have been destroyed, however the main assembly hall was preserved along with its remarkable (15th images and Murals). The top chamber is decorated with fantastic mandalas in Sakya tradition.

Continue to Shigatse and visit Tashilunpo, which is the seat of the Panchen Lama, second only in importance to the Dalai Lama. Panchen means a great scholar and was traditionally best owned on the abbots of Tashilumpo. Its numerous halls contain a 21.6 meter wooden status of Maitreya, the future Buddha & elaborate, jewel encrusted reliquary chorten.
Day 7 Shigatse - Shegar via Sakya
You will travel through the main agricultural area of Central Tibet in the direction of Sakya. In the right season you will see the Tibetans working or harvesting their land.
Again you pass a high pass, the Tso La (4950 meters). After the pass take take the exit to Sakya, for a visit to this beautifully situated village. From afar, the walled fortress-like building towers up. This is the Sakya Monastery. The monastery of the once mighty Sakyapa sect has been largely spared the destruction in the cultural revolution, witness the unique library and the old wall paintings. The red and white vertical strips in which the village and monastery are painted represent the Sakya pa direction in Tibetan Buddhism. You will then travel on to the village of Shegar.
Day 8 Shegar - Rombuk & Hike to Everest Base Camp
After leaving Shegar, we will turn off the friendship highway for a stunning drive through Qomolangma National Park to reach the tiny Ronghphu Gompa at 5000m.
